Governments

Our administrative law group offers a full range of services to Alberta municipalities ranging in size from summer villages to major urban centres. We assist in matters such as bylaw development and drafting, bylaw enforcement, commercial transactions, land matters, development agreements and administrative hearings. We are pleased to serve as counsel to the Association of Urban Municipalities in Alberta. Our firm also acts for the Alberta Provincial Government on various municipal-related matters.

Municipal Law
We advise a number of Alberta municipalities on all aspects of municipal law. Our services include bylaw drafting an analysis, interpretation and application of the Municipal Government Act, the formation of Regional Services Commissions and the preparation of Development Agreements for new subdivisions. Our firm has provided specific advise to municipalities on the structure and function of fire and emergency services.

Associations
Sharek&Co.’s legal team has considerable experience acting on behalf of associations representing their municipal government membership. Our services have been used in the operation of their reciprocal insurance exchange program and in the formation of a corporate subsidiary for various aggregated commercial activities undertaken on behalf of its members.

Reciprocal Insurance Exchanges
We have assisted a number of associations in the formation and operation of their reciprocal insurance exchanges. Memberships include municipalities and school boards as well as other non-profit entities participating as additional named insured’s.

Equalized Assessment Appeals
Municipalities in Alberta may appeal their equalized assessment to the Municipal Government Board in the Province. Our firm has represented the Alberta Provincial Government at these hearings.
